What Positions Are Available?

Fiction Editor and Poetry Editor positions are currently open. Thank you to those boundlessly creative literary explorers who applied. In the past, we’ve filled those positions with imaginative, bold cosmonauts who astutely understand the mission and spirit of Orion’s Belt, and we hope to do so again next year.

As always, we also need First Readers, without whom the publication could not function. We’re a professional, SFWA-qualifying magazine that receives thousands of submissions a year, and we need your help.

Fiction Editor

This is a person who is ostensibly experienced and who knows the ethos of Orion’s Belt quite well. They will be responsible for reviewing submissions, providing feedback, and choosing the best and most elucidating submissions we receive every week. They will fuse a care for imaginative, poignant storytelling with a respect for lucid, elegantly constructed prose.

When we choose a story, they will work with the author to edit and refine the work. They will as such be working quite closely with the Editor-in-Chief. Prior experience at a speculative-fiction magazine recommended; prior experience as editor not requested.

Poetry Editor

This person will be responsible for reviewing poetry submissions and choosing the handful of best poetry submissions we receive every given week for the editor-in-chief to examine. Orion’s Belt is one of the few speculative fiction magazines that highly and explicitly prize poetry as an artform, and this person will astutely honor that legacy.

They will ideally be experienced with studying and critiquing poetry, with a particular attention to style and language. They will work with poets to refine and sharpen the poetry we choose at Orion’s Belt. As such, the poetry editor will be working closely with the Editor-in-Chief. Some prior experience at a speculative-fiction magazine is recommended.

First Readers

If you’re interested in helping Orion’s Belt, come be a First Reader for us. You are the first round of readers here at Orion’s Belt, responsible for reading and evaluating a large quantity of work each week. Consider specifying whether you want to read short stories or poetry.
